Church and community upliftment programmes
Various church and community upliftment programmes rummage through our stored waste and select what they need and take it away at no cost (reducing what we move to landfill).
Hawkers are invited to remove materials from our stored rejects on allocated days at no cost to them. They make belts and other leather items for sale from these off cuts.
Below-market rates for informal traders
More established SMME informal traders pay a below-market rate for over-runs (spare hides and buckles) that are left over when an order is completed. This is less about reducing waste, and more about giving small traders access to raw materials at reduced costs.
