cCelebrating the Female Entrepreneurs Behind Leather Zulu

Earlier this women’s month, we celebrated the strong women at Equator – the Belt Factory™ by sharing lessons from five of them.

This week we are celebrating two entrepreneurial women that we are proud to be associated with:

Sisters Thembi Mazibuko-Kahimbaara and Mpumi Mazibuko – the entrepreneurs behind Leather Zulu, an artisanal leather goods workshop servicing fashion designers, retailers, marketers, interior designers and more.

The sisters, based in Johannesburg South Africa, left their corporate careers in investment banking and telecommunications engineering to set up the crafts business in the hope to connect with something tangible, rather than just numbers on a balance sheet. To build a manufacturing business that would stimulate the local fashion economy. Moving from strength to strength, Leather Zulu was also recently selected to participate in a New York Fashion Week exhibition.

Equator was excited to host the sisters for 2 days, engaging them with our production planning, sales, sourcing, costing, accounting etc teams to share our challenges, lessons and processes which have come a long way since we too were a startup business.

In this knowledge sharing process,  we were and continue to be inspired by Thembi and Mpumi’s tenacity, dedication, passion and deep care for their craftspeople.

Their products are world-class but celebrate a unique south African aesthetic including a Shweshe lining. You can browse their custom, crafted leather bags, gifts and accessories on their website.
